hello all. quick question. i am going through and setting the timing on my cb450, and took off the cover for the alternator rotor and noticed a bit of oil leaking out, which i expected based on the layout, but with it there was a saturated amount of gasoline coming out as well. any ideas on a reason for this leaking into the compartment? i thought it would mainly be oil.

| The fuel comes from the usual place. It gets into the cylinders because you have too high a float level, a dented or leaking float (gets fuel in it; doesn't float at the right height) or a leaking float valve. Fuel rises into the carb throat, seeps into the cylinder, washes the oil off the cylinder walls and flows past the rings into the oil sump. Assuming your close the fuel cock when you shut off the motor, that, too, may leak. not unusual when they get old. Change the oil. Set the float height and watch for fuel seepage with the float gauge in place. With the carb assembled and the air cleaner off, you can lift the piston and carefully stuff a piece of cloth under it around the needle. If that gets soaked with fuel, you're still leaking. |
